EMDR Therapy: You Don’t Have to Relive Your Worst Day to Heal

Many people put off trauma therapy because they fear having to relive their most painful experiences. But EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works differently.

Here’s what you can expect from the process.

It Starts With Calm

Before working with difficult memories, you’ll build grounding skills to help you feel safe and supported. This may include creating a mental “calm place” you can return to whenever you need it.

You Stay in Control

During EMDR, you’ll briefly bring a memory to mind, but you don’t have to describe every detail out loud. You can pause or take a break whenever you need to.

The Memory Stays, but the Weight Can Lift

Over time, many people find that difficult memories feel less intense and less overwhelming. The experience remains part of your story, but it may no longer carry the same emotional weight.

Think of clouds in the sky. They don’t have to disappear for the light to shine through. That’s what healing can look like.

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR is one of the treatments recommended for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the VA/DoD clinical practice guideline. However, it isn’t the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay. A mental health professional can help you explore your options and determine what may work best for you.

At Mindful Vision Counseling, Elizabeth is EMDR-certified, and Tara is EMDR-trained. Both office and telehealth sessions are available.

Take the First Step Toward Healing

You don’t have to face your past alone, and healing doesn’t have to mean reliving every painful moment.
